The Life Before Her Eyes (R)
Director: Vadim Perelman. With Uma Thurman, Rachel Evan Wood. (90 min.)
This moody, dreamlike drama conflates a Columbine massacrelike narrative with the story of a woman who apparently survived the shooting as a teenager and must now cope with the emotional consequences. Director Vadim Perelman ("House of Sand and Fog") is big on slo-mo lyrical effects and confusing time shifts, making the movie unnecessarily arty and detracting from what could have been a searing psychological study. Based on a novel by Laura Kasischke. – Peter Rainer
Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden? (PG-13)
Director: Morgan Spurlock. With Morgan Spurlock. (93 min.)
Morgan Spurlock ("Super Size Me") is a jokester politico in the Michael Moore vein, and his latest documentary is a low concept posing as a high concept. He films his "search" for Osama bin Laden in a trek that takes him to Egypt, Morocco, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Everywhere he goes he asks if anybody knows bin Laden's whereabouts – as if anybody is going to tell him! Why should we accompany him on his self-aggrandizing trip?– P.R.
