Tiger Woods set to tee off in tournament he helped create
The top golfers on the PGA tour this year are preparing for Friday's first round of the eighth annual Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts. The Labor Day weekend event is the second leg of the Tour's FedEx Playoffs.
On and off the course, this year has been a bad one for Tiger Woods, by his own standards. But the 2006 Deutsche Bank champ managed to qualify for last week's Barclays tournament, then finished in 12th place to continue on the PGA playoff push this holiday weekend.
In 2003, Tiger's foundation, IMG, the management company that represents him, Deutsche Bank, and the PGA Tour got together to bring professional golf back to the Boston area. The Pleasant Valley Open, which was played in Sutton, Massachusetts, ended its run in 1998. According to the tournament's website, the Deutsche Bank Championship has provided nearly $17 million to the Tiger Woods Foundation and other New England-area charities over the past seven years.
Defending champion Steve Stricker and Barclays winner Matt Kuchar lead a group of 100 Deutsche Bank competitors who will try to continue the playoff quest. The top 70 in the FedEx points standings after this weekend advance to the BMW Championship at Cog Hill outside Chicago, starting Sept. 9.
