Alex Schibli, of the City Island section of the Bronx, NY, purchased the 2 1/2-acre Rat Island, which is located right off of his property, for $160,000 at an auction. Here, Schibli is shown on Rat Island.

When you think of private islands, New York City's Rat Island may not pop up instantly in your mind.

Yes, it's an island like you might find in the South Pacific, but it isn't exactly luxurious.

It's really just a pile of rocks that once housed quarantined typhoid patients.

But the island sold at auction Sunday for $160,000. Real estate agent Ozzie Crisalli says he doesn't know what the buyer has planned for it.

One news report identified the buyer as Alex Schibli, who resides in the City Island section of the Bronx.

Rat Island is located off City Island. It boasts 360-degree views of the water and measures about 2 1/2 acres — during low tide.
