The Monitor's Dec. 18 issue reported incorrect estimates for West German defense spending. In fact, West Germany is hiking defense spending a nominal 6. 2 percent in 1981, for an estimated real growth of 1.8 percent. This falls short of the NATO-pledged 3 percent growth, but the Bonn government expects to up this with a supplementary budget later in the year. (East Germany one-upped the West German military increase Dec. 17 with an announced rise of 8.4 percent.)
