'Reds' in the lead for Oscar laurels

Warren Beatty's film ''Reds'' and ''On Golden Pond,'' starring Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn, led the field of nominations for this year's Academy Awards.
''Reds,'' which tells of the experiences of radical journalist John Reed in revolutionary Russia, won 12 nominations, while ''On Golden Pond'' won 10.
The British film ''Chariots of Fire,'' which tells of two athletes training for the 1924 Olympic Games, received seven nominations, and ''Ragtime'' and ''Raiders of the Lost Ark'' each received eight.
The Oscar winners are decided by members of the movie industry who belong to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. This year's winners will be announced March 29.
