Letters from far-flung readers make us suspect there are far-flung reservoirs of wit and knowledge waiting to be tapped. The Home Forum Competition is your invitation to share in the fun of tapping them.

For instance, have you noticed the increasingly elaborate TV presentations of simple weather reports? They're almost enough to send us back to singer Bob Dylan's observation that you don't need a weatherman to tell which way the wind is blowing.

Please brighten our skies by writing a weather report in the style of Shakespeare, Conan Doyle, Emily Dickinson, or a familiar author of your own choice.

There may be a guideline in writer E.B. White's pleasant fancy of having Henry David Thoreau dial W-e-a-t-h-e-r and hear his own words over the phone: ''This is a delicious evening, etc.'' We know you can do better than a weatherman Hamlet: ''To be sunny, or not to be sunny: That is the question raised by a 50 percent chance of precipitation.''
