Marcos designates potential successor
President Ferdinand Marcos Monday designated Prime Minister Cesar Virata as his successor in a move to prevent a power struggle if his term is cut short. Mr. Virata, who has wide support among the nation's business community, now is the next in line to take over should the ailing Mr. Marcos be unable to finish his term, which expires in 1987. He also serves as the finance minister.
In addition to answering opposition criticism he had no obvious successor, the Marcos announcement appeared aimed at calming the anxious international business and banking community.
The announcement said elections were to be held within 60 days of a change in power.
