California sues ExxonMobil over misleading recycled plastic. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said less than 5% of plastics are being recycled into another plastic product in the United States despite being labeled as recyclable. The lawsuits allege ExxonMobil misled the public through statements and slick marketing campaigns that promised recycling would address the global plastics pollution crisis. ExxonMobil is one of the world’s largest producers of plastics. In another move against plastic, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law on Sep. 23 that bans all plastic shopping bags from California starting in 2026.
