East Coast storm delivers record rain. A Dec. 12 storm swept up the East Coast and delivered a blow to New England. Packing heavy wind that knocked out power, the storm came with a deluge of rain and warmer temperatures that washed away snow and dampened ski resorts. An atmospheric river transported moisture northward from the tropics, bringing heavy rain Dec. 11. Portland, Maine, got 2.33 inches of rain Wednesday, breaking an 1887 record of 2.01 inches. Utility workers were deployed to handle power outages for nearly 90,000 customers in Maine.
