Typhoon approaches Taiwan. Typhoon Krathon has brought strong winds and torrential rainfall as it nears Taiwan, killing one person and injuring at least 70 over the past few days and leading to the evacuation of thousands from low-lying or mountainous areas, according to fire officials on Oct. 2. The typhoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 108 mph and gusts of 130 mph, is expected to make landfall early Oct. 3 on Taiwan’s densely populated west coast, according to the Central Weather Administration. Typhoons rarely hit Taiwan’s west coast, instead affecting the mountainous on the eastern side of the island.
