In what was widely viewed as an implicit condemnation of the George W. Bush administration, Barack Obama was awarded the peace prize "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples" only eight and a half months into his term. Critics from across the political spectrum expressed surprise at the award being handed to a head of state who at the time had accomplished no major foreign policy achievements. For his part, Obama said that he did not feel as though he deserved the award.
