The 1994 prize went to Arafat, Peres, and Rabin, "for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East." The award to Arafat prompted Kåre Kristiansen, a Norwegian member of the Nobel Committee, to resign in protest, calling the PLO chairman a "terrorist." Arafat's defenders noted that one of the previous year's winners, Nelson Mandela, was a commander in the African National Congress's armed wing, which was classified as a terrorist organization by the South African government and the United States.
