The most contentious issue may be the borders of the new state. The status of Abyei region, which lies between South Sudan and North Sudan, is still up in the air, and the border itself remains undefined. The whole border region, particularly Abyei and South Kordofan, has been plagued by violence the last few months. Agreements and the withdrawal of forces have calmed the hostilities for now, but significant tension remains.
