Chicago teachers resume talks to end strike

Striking teachers here resumed negotiations Wednesday in hopes of ending their three-day-old strike. Firemen again threatened a walkout. The Teachers Union president, Robert Healey, said as he entered negotiations that he felt there was a chance the strike could be settled through new bargaining. He said the union had submitted several proposals for cutting $60 million from the school board's budget -- the main issue.
The school board and the teachers agreed late Tuesday to postpone further court action on suits filed in the dispute and instead return to negotiations.
