Demand for engineers picks up

February 8, 1980

Demand for engineers and scientists moved upward during the closing months of 1979, offsetting a small dip in October and pushing the high-technology recruitment index to its highest level since 1966. This performance suggests that the long-predicted recession has yet to arrive in this industry.

The index, which is maintained by Deutsch, Shea & Evans Inc., measures the volume of recruitment advertising directed toward engineers and scientists.

From its lowest point in the year of 141 in October, the index moved up to 144 in November. The December index was at 151. Thus the average for the year is 144, the second highest in the 19-year history of the index.
