Ecologists failed to prevent a load of Japanese nuclear waste from reaching the La Hague reprocessing center, near Cherbourg, Thursday after clashes with French authorities on land and sea. Campaigners in rubber dinghies, members of the ecological group Greenpeace, tried to cut the mooring lines of the British freighter Pacific Swan while the waste was being transferred from it to trucks and freight trains, police said.
French sailors scuffled with ecologists on the rubber dinghies, and six persons were detained, police said.
