Hundreds of people may have been killed and thousands wounded in street fighting in the Afghan capital of Kabul in recent days, informed sources said here Sunday.
The new Soviet-backed Afghan government said it crushed an attempt organized by the United States, China, and Pakistan to mount a revolt against it. The Afghan government communique, broadcast by Radio Radio, came after antigovernment demonstrations in Kabul Friday.
The sources here said bazaars and shops in Kabul were closed for the fourth consecutive day in a sign of continuing unrest. Intermittent firing also could be heard, they said.
