CIA use of missionaries opposed by church unit

February 25, 1980

American religious organizations are not happy with reports that the administration wants to ease proposed restrictions on the CIA's use of missionaries.

The National Council of Churches, made up of 32 Protestant and Orthodox denominations, has passed a resolution urging Congress to prohibit the practice.

It asked Congress to make sure the new CIA charter includes "explicit prohibitions against recruiting or employing members of the clergy or church workers -- American or foreign -- as information or agents in any capacity at home or abroad."
