Yokosuka, Japan
Nearly 6,000 people opposed to Japan's participation in a five-nation Pacific military exercise demonstrated on land and sea at this naval port Sunday, police said. The protest, organized by the major opposition Socialist Party and affiliated labor organizations, came two days before the start of the military exercise Rimpac 80, involving 41 warships, 200 aircraft, and 20,000 men from the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Japan is sending two destroyers and eight planes for its first participation in a joint exercise.
