Guerrillas in Bogota free Vienna's ambassador

Left-wing guerrillas who have been holding the Dominican Republic Embassy in Bogota since Feb. 27 released Austrian Ambassador Edgar Seizer Thursday for what they said was a humanitarian motive.

"Commander One," the apparent leader of the group, told Reuters by telephone that Mr. Seizer was freed because his wife, Edith, was seriously ill in Austria.

The guerrillas, still holding about a dozen ambassadors -- including Diego Asencio, the US ambassador to Colombia, and others estimated at 19 -- wanted to show their goodwill.
