Phone records disputed in Kopechne inquest

Telephone records that might have supported or disputed Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's account of the Chappaquiddick incident were withheld from the inquest into Mary Jo Kopechne's death, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The Times said the Edgartown District Court, which conducted the inquest in January 1970, had subpoenaed all calls billed to Mr. Kennedy's telephone credit cards on July 19, 1969, the day of the accident, and the next day.

But the Times said New England Telephone & Telegraph Company submitted to the court only one of at least four lists of calls it had, and none of the calls Senator Kennedy described in the inquest testimony were on the list.
