St. Brieuc, France
Oil from the shipwrecked Madagascar tanker Tanio spread eastward along 40 miles of Britanny coast over the weekend, polluting picturesque bays and tourist beaches. Local authorities have asked the French Army for reinforcement to support the 1,100 troops already helping local villagers clean up stained beaches and rescue wildlife.
