Fighting scatters Cambodian refugee camp

A fierce battle erupted in a borderstraddling refugee camp Wednesday, sending more than 55,000 people fleeing for their lives across the frontier. At least nine refugees were killed and 22 wounded in the day-long fighting at Camp Rehou, on the Thai-Cambodian frontier about 150 miles east of Bangkok. The camp leader , self-styled "Marshal" Van Saren, said the fighting was sparked by a Vietnamese artillery barrage against the encampment shortly after dawn. Western relief workers in the area, howevr, said the fighting was internecine and broke out after one group of anticommunist Khmer Serei (Free Cambodian) soldiers attempted a coup against Van Saren and his leadership.
