Israeli dissidents hail antigovernment turnout

Israel's "Peace Now" dissidents took heart Sunday from the big turnout for their first major antigovernment demonstration and resoved to push ahead with campaigning for the downfall of Prime Minister Menachem Begin.

An estimated 25,000 protesters paraded Saturday along a giant 100-mile-long route stretching south along the highway from Haifa to Tel Aviv and then east to Jerusalem.

The group plans its next actions after Passover, the first week in April. The Peace Now movement is trying to seek moderation in dealing with Israel's Arab neighbors so as to promote comprehensive peace. It has no formal membership and its policies are not rigidly defined.
