The average motorist will spend $3,176 this year to finance and drive a 1980 model car, says the American Automobile Association. The figure is based on a six-cylinder Chevrolet Malibu driven up to 15,000 miles during the year. The cost includes a fouryear loan; 5.86 cents a mile for gasoline and oil; 1.12 cents for maintenance; $490 a year for insurance, excluding young drivers; $82 for license, registration, and taxes; $1,038 for depreciation; and $423 for finance charges.
