Violence ebbs after police calm British 'beachheads'

England's seaside towns were peaceful Tuesday after Easter weekend rioting among rival youth gangs at several beaches, the second major outburst of mob violence in a week.

In Scarborough, police arrested 217 persons after a crowd of about 3,000 youths rode scooters into the area Saturday and turned the beaches into a battleground. In Southend, a popular resort for Londoners, 72 persons were arrested after a 10-hour fight with violent teen-agers. In Margate, 250 motor-scooter riders were driven out by police patrols. Other incidents were recorded by police.

A week ago, 28 persons were injured in Bristol in an attack on police by angry youths.
