2,500 Rhodesia guerrillas reported to return home
April 10, 1980
Salisbury, Rhodesia
Almost 2,500 guerrillas returned to Rhodesia from their bases in Zambia over the past week, diplomatic sources said. The guerrillas, members of the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army, returned to their homeland. Between 6,000 and 8,000 of the group's guerrillas reamined in Zambia after the Dec. 28 cease-fire in Rhodesia's seven-year bush war. Some 6,000 more of them inside the country reported to commonwealth-monitored cease-fire assembly places.
The remaining guerrillas in Zambia are expected to be repatriated before Rhodesia becomes independent from Britain as the new state of Zimbabwe at midnight on April 17, military sources reported.
