How to get rid of screen oxidation
April 11, 1980
Q. How do I remove white patches of corrosion from old aluminum window screens? Ordinary scrubbing doesn't work. Also, what will prevent oxidation in the future? Gordon K. Douglass Oakland, Md.
A. To remove oxidation from aluminum screens, use a rolling-type wire brush which is specifically made for this condition.
As to what kind of material to use to prevent oxidation in the future, we are not sure. Ask your local aluminum window distributor. Improper coatings might tend to plug up the screen itself.
Here's a tip: When the aluminum screens need replacing, use quite inexpensive fiberglass screening instead. Fiber glass does not oxidize.
