Campaign Roundup (6)
April 21, 1980
Reagan got a boost from the right this past week as model conservative Phil Crane dropped out of the Republican race and threw his support behind Mr. Reagan.
Representative Crane (R) of Illinois, who in August 1978 was the first candidate of either major party to declare his candidacy for the presidency, says he will lead a group of congressmen who will work to elect Mr. Reagan.
Meanwhile, Reagan has crossed the halfway point in the race to stockpile delegates for the nomination. According to both Reagan and Bush campaign officials, Reagan is now assured of at least 44 of Virginia's GOP delegates in an ongoing series of caucuses there ending in May. This gives Reagan 501 of the 998 delegates needed to win the nomination.m
