Caramanlis role uncertain in new Greek elections

It is not yet certain whether Prime Minister Constantine Caramanlis will be a candidate for president of the Greek Republic, but his final decision must be made by April 23, Monitor special correspondent Helen Mellas reports. The five-year term of President Constantine Tsatsos expires in June. Parliament will elect a new president in May.
A change from prime minister to president by Mr. Caramanlis would be a natural evolution for the country's dominant political personality who served eight years as prime minister before the seven-year Greek military regime.
