New Liberian government executes 13 ex-officials
April 23, 1980
Monrovia, Liberia
Thirteen former high government officials were executed Tuesday by a firing squad of the military government of former Army M/Sgt. Samuel K. Doe. Among them was Senate President Pro Tem Frank Tolbert, brother of the slain former president, William Tolbert, and former Justice Minister Joseph Chesson. The executions came despite attempts by the United States and other foreign governments to urge restraint on the new government in taking reprisals for actions of the former regime.
