Indiana prison strife ends; demands to be discussed

A 16-hour uprising at Indiana State Prison ended Monday when state officials agreed to discuss prisoner demands that include amnesty for those involved in the insurrection, a review of prisoner arrests and convictions, and better medical treatment. Rioting at the 119-year-old maximum-security prison began Sunday when about 180 inmates took control of a security unit and cellblock and took seven hostages, who have been released. Four previous riots and demonstrations over conditions have taken place at the prison since 1973.
