On Wintering Over

May 23, 1980

To the real estate editor: In answer to Robert Hill's question on the feasibility of closing up a home during a New England winter:

We turn off the heat in November at our house on Cape Cod. Our hot-water heating system is filled with antifreeze to prevent freezing and all water is drained from the taps, etc. We have had no damage from cold or dampness other than minor difficulties, such as swelled doors or dried-out washers in the faucets.
