S. Africa police arrest clergymen in march
Johannesburg
Riot police Monday arrested 52 people, including a number of clergymen, as they marched on Johannesburg police headquarters to protest the detention of a Colored (mixed race) church minister. Mr. Thorne, a minister of the United Congregational Church, was detained Saturday just before he was due to address a student gathering. He has played an out- spoken role in the recent classroom boycott by mainly Colored students protesting discrimination in the South African education system.
Prominent black activist Bishop Desmond Tutu, secretary-general of the South African Council of Churches, and the white Anglican bishop of Johannesburg were among leading South African churchmen arrested. An SACC spokesman said the group arrested will appear in court, although no charges have been filed.
In South Africa it is an offense to take part in an unauthorized procession.
