Bolivian Army seeks new control

In the wake of an Army revolt in the eastern city of Santa Cruz, it looks as if Lidia Gueiler Tejada's days as President of Bolivia are numbered, Monitor Latin America correspondent James Nelson Goodsell reports. While the fate of the revolt remains uncertain at this writing, there is little doubt that the Bolivian Army would like to unseat Mrs. Gueiler and resume power itself. The Santa Cruz revolt, led by Rangers of the 2d Army Corps, called for the return to power of the Falange Party, which backs Gen. Hugo Banzer Suarez, a former president, in presidential balloting scheduled June 29. The whereabouts of General Banzer were not known, but he has been close to the 2d Army Corps and used that military force, based in lowland Santa Cruz, as his own springboard to power in 1971.
