Hussein hopes Congress will OK sale of tanks

King Hussein told an NBC "Meet the Press" television news panel Sunday that he "hopes" Congress will not object to the purchase by Jordan of 100 US M-60-A3 main battle tanks, Monitor correspondent John K. Cooley reports. Congress must approve any such arms sale within 30 days of its journal presentation.

The Jordanian leader said he saw no reason why Congress should object, but said that he could seek upgraded tanks elsewhere if necessary. He reaffirmed Jordan's opposition to the Camp David Egyptian-Israel accords, but said he would continue, as he always had, to work for good Arab-US relations. Under the agreement, another 100 tanks would be offered to Jordan later, if all goes well.
