US calls on USSR to urge Viets to halt Thai attacks

The United States appealed directly to the Soviet Union Thursday to urge its Vietnam ally to halt any further attacks on Thailand, the State Department said. Soviet Ambassador Anatoly F. Dobrynin was given the US message at a State Department meeting with Allen Holmes, acting assistant secretary of state, a spokesman said. The Soviet Union is Vietnam's chief arms supplier.

Meanwhile, President Carter came under harsh attack by the Soviet press Thursday for his statement saying the United States would consider supporting a transitional government in Afghanistan once all Soviet troops were withdrawn. The press criticism apparently signaled a flat rejection by the Kremlin of the proposal made Tuesday in Belgrade.
