N.Y.C. moves to avert strike

New York officials took legal action Tuesday aimed at averting a threat ened strike by city police, firemen, and other uniformed workers. A court injunction was expected to be issued today (July 2). New York's uniformed employees had agreed to strike today if no agreement were reached in negotiations that have been deadlocked on the question of pay increases. Contracts for 42,000 workers expired Monday night.
In Detroit, some 9,000 municipal workers went on strike Tuesday, two weeks before the city hosts the Republican Party's national convention. The strikes represent 40 percent of the city's (c) ,000 workers. The union wants a 7 percent annual pay increase.
Meanwhile, thousands of copper workers in eight states also went on strike Tuesday in a dispute over wages.
