July 15, 1980

President Choi Kyu-hah accepted the resignation of Lt. Gen. Chun Doohwan Monday as director of South Korea's Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) and named the commander of the Third Army, Gen. Yu Hak-song, as his successor. A government statement said General Yu was retired from active service immediately.

General Chun, who also heads the military equivalent of the KCIA, was the prime target of student demonstrations across the country earlier this ear and of the rebellion in the southern city of Kwangju last May.
