Soviets step up cleanup of eastern Afghan rebels

Soviet occupation forces have intensified their offensives in eastern Afghanistan, Muslim rebels said Sunday. The rebels said the military drive appeared to be a concerted effort to clean out guerrilla nests near the capital before cool weather sets in next month.

A rebel spokesman said at least 93 women and children were killed and several villages destroyed in heavy bombing in Alishing Valley, about 95 miles northeast of Kabul.

Meanwhile, Soviet forces appear to have quelled a mutiny by Afghan army units at Ghanzi, south of Kabul. Air activity over Kabul, which increased considerably during the mutiny 10 days before, is now back to normal with only occasional helicopter sorties, diplomatic sources say.
