Chilean policemen face trials in kidnappings

August 13, 1980

President Augusto Pinochet Monday ordered prosecution of policemen responsible for recent kidnappings and interrogation of students suspected of left-wing sympathies. Judicial authorities have been investigating kidnappings that took place here between July 18 and 30. One of the students died later of injuries inflicted by the kidnappers.

Meanwhile, preparations are being made for a Sept. 11 plebiscite on a new constitution allowing President Pinochet to stay in power until 1989. A new president, proposed by the commanders in chief of the armed forces and ratified by another plebiscite, would then take over for an eight-year period of office.
