US-Soviet trade sags from invasion boycott

US-Soviet trade, hit by American economic sanctions, slumped 39 percent for the first five months of this years compared with the correspondings period last year. The January-May figures, released Wednesday by the US Commercial Office here, showed that trade between the two countries was down to $772 million, compared with $1.27 billion in the same period last year, with US exports -- mainly agricultural products -- suffering most.

The drop reflected the poor relations between the superpowers since the December Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan.
