Cuba arrests refugees who hijacked US planes

August 20, 1980

Fidel Castro's government is apparently jailing the refugees who have hijacked US airliners to Cuba, the State Department says. Passengers on flights hijacked to Cuba report that Cuban police have arrested all hijackers on arrival.

The department also said Cuba has turned down at least five overtures for reaching an agreement on an orderly return of refugees who wish to go back to their island home. One method, the spokesman said, might be to arrange regularly scheduled or special charter flights between Miami and Havana.
