Nicaragua to hold off elections till 1985

National elections will not be held here until 1985, and until then the Sandinista-dominated junta will continue to rule, junta member Daniel Ortega Saavedra said at a political rally Saturday. Before the Sandinista victory in July 1979, the leftist rebels had promised political moderates to hold elections as soon as possible.

Mr. Ortega said that the public will learn to participate more effectively in national affairs over the next five years and that Nicaragua will have time to rebuild its economy and maintain a just and equal society. He devoted much of his speech to a five-month literacy campaign in which, he said, 406,056 Nicaraguans learned to read, lowering the country's illiteracy rate to about 13 percent.
