Jobless in Britain set post-depression record

The number of jobless people in Britain in August rose above 2 million for the first time since the Great Depression, the government announced Wednesday. this means 8.3 percent of the work force is without jobs, and Employment Secretary James Prior warned the situation will get worse before it gets better.

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher braced herself for a storm of anger from trade union leaders and the Labour opposition, who say the high unemployment is caused by her monetarist economic policies designed to defeat inflation.
