Western bankers are among those most interested in stability in strike-torn Poland. Banks in the US and other Western nations have lent Poland over $19 billion. Even in calmer times, Poland would be strained to repay. Fat settlements by the government to pacify striking workers could strain the economy even more.
Risk to US banks is limited. Their share of the loans is believed under $2 billion.m
