US-Canadian relations have gotten as slippery as a wet codfish. It's all being caused by a fishing treaty. The pact spells out fishing quotas and ocean boundaries between the two nations. But New England senators contend the US gave too much away in negotiations; they want their friend from Maine, Secretary of State Edmund Muskie, to break tradition and renegotiate the treaty.
Canada calls the treaty its No. 1 dispute with the US. If talks are reopened , it may ask for concessions beyond just the fishing agreement.m
