Six men convicted of arson in a movie theater fire that killed 377 people in Abadan, Iran, two years ago were executed early Thursday on the orders of a special court. Widespread anger over the tragedy at the Rex Cinema on Aug. 19, 1978, led to street violence across Iran and is considered to have been a key turning point in the revolution that brought down the late Shah six months later.
