Prayer in public schools: the issue is stirring again. Senator Jesse Helms is sponsoring a bill that would prohibit the US Supreme Court from ruling on stat laws dealing with "voluntary prayers in the public schools." The legislation, now stalled in committee, is given a fair chance of passage. But experts say it would almost certainly be ruled unconstitutional.

Fundamentalists are the muscle behind the move. Tradition religious groups worry it would infringe on the separation of church and state.m
