Philadelphia teachers end strike; schools opening

The city's teachers ended their three-week strike, voting by voice vote to ratify a new two-year agreement worked out in a weekend of nonstop negotiations. The teachers were asked to report for work Monday so classes could open today (Sept. 23) for the city's 220,000 students. The contract agreed to make up for nine lost school days.

In San Jose, Calif., school officials and negotiators for striking teachers reached agreement after an all-night bargaining session, and breakthroughs took place in districts in Washington State, New Jersey, and elsewhere in Pennsylvania. But other walkouts still affected more than 100,000 students in seven states.
